Back to Work

Fri Aug 28, 2009, 11:49 PM

I already posted some of the work I've done so far, so go take a look! I'm doing a lot of animation and story work this semester.. so most of what I will have to show will be figure drawings and sketches. But you can look forward to a character design of a young god for my animation story :D

I think I like your Bo Peep and Gestures the most out of your other drawings. Do you go to CSU San Jose? If so, do you know Sheldon? He's a professor there.

Anywhat, I was wondering how you go about drawing your gestures or if you have any advice/hints on them. Thanks and great work.

Yeah, I've had Sheldon a number of times, he's a really awesome instructor. Do you go to his school in LA? Or how do you know him?

And uhm for gestures.. which are my favorite too btw :) I first think it's important to practice on really short poses, like 30 seconds, a minute and then 2 minute. I like forcing myself to use brush pens because there is no going back, which you don't have time for anyway. I draw first the main action, usually the spine and legs and then put the head and arms on after (depending on the pose). It's sort of like looking at the model and deciding what is most important in telling the story, if the model has an arm that is visually leading me into her body, ill draw that first. Usually though, I start with the spine and get the pose and then put on the head. Most important is getting all the information down, before trying to go in and adjust or add detail. Get the pose and the weight and the story first.. then you can go back and mess with it.

Wow.. that was kinda long :D I hope it helped though. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. I love giving critiques, red lines and advice, so I'd be happy to help anytime :)

Sheldon is a very awesome and interesting guy. I actually met him at my old university (I transferred to a different one). He was a guest speaker there. We're now exchanging emails.

Don't worry about the long post. It was very informative. Have you read Drawn to Life by Walt Stanchfield? It's a new book, but his notes have been floating around the internet for some time. I mention it because your approach is fairly similar to his.

Do you have any of your shorter poses online anywhere? (30 sec ones).

I actually found your DA from gaia, so it's a pretty small world. It was one of the few times I check the "Post your Deviantart account" threads. I'm glad I did though. :)

Do you have a Facebook? I have a few gestures on there. If you had free time, I would love to have your opinion/critique on them.

Yeah, my can find me on facebook by Carli Fenton or i_am_super_penguin@yahoo.com I don't think I have any shorter poses up on here, but they're on my comp so I can upload them for you. I've heard of the book you're talking about, but I haven't had the chance to get it yet. Go ahead and send an invite on facebook and I can talk to you easier there :)

Done (sent the invitation) :)

You don't have to upload them if it's a hassle. I'm interested in seeing how you draw people and motion from the every day life. It's a really great book and I recommend it.
